Merifiana is a theocracy, hence the use of Gothic architecture in its decoration. The characters in the compass rose are from my own "Netheldian" alphabet, and say "Samar" (i. e., the name of the king with the wolf sleeping at his feet). Samar was a king who routed out a conspiracy of heretics in his court; the sleeping wolf represents his triumph over this threat.
