• Weekly Round-up - 4th June, 2018

Welcome to the weekly round-up, a summary of what’s happened at the Guild over the past seven days.

    Challenge News

May 2018 Challenge : Create a set of stamps

May's challenge was exactly what the title suggests. Create a set of postage stamps with a map theme.

We had some amazing submissions this month, and it was a very close vote between the top few entries. Our winner this month is Tonquani for 'Stamps from the Grand Thordar Republic'. Tonquani wins a first gold compass, and the congrats of all at the Guild.

Honourable mention to runner-up Vobland for 'Midwals Stamps'.

June 2018 Challenge: Map a Frontier

June's challenge has just started, and this month we want to see some 'edgy' mapping! Diamond writes...

This month's challenge is to map a frontier or transitional zone of some kind. This could be a literal frontier or even a conceptual one. It can be a large area or small. Style and genre are up to you. Some ideas:

    - Map a part of the American Old West
    - the transition from life to death
    - a space frontier, like the Neutral Zone from Star Trek
    - the ocean floor, as in the dropoff from continental shelf to the depths, or from beach to water, etc
    - the area between the Blight and the civilized lands in the Wheel of Time books
    - the borders of a quarantined area
    - the treeline of a mountain range, or other major ecological/geological transition areas

More info in the intro thread.

May / June 2018 Lite Challenge: The Fast, Free and Crazy Challenge!

If you're fast, there's still time to enter the Lite Challenge. REMEMBER: the challenge is finishing a little earlier than usual this time, due to Bogie's other commitments. Bogie will close the challenge on the evening of Sunday 10th June (US East Coast timezone), so make sure your final entries are submitted before then.

You can read more about the challenge in the intro thread, and check out the current entries here.

    Challenge Suggestions

We've had a couple of suggestions for new challenges in the last week...

FaeThropp suggests "Map a region in the shadow plane".

"The shadow plane is a distorted reflection of the material plane. Where there is live and light on the material plane, there is destruction, (un-)death and darkness on the shadow plane. Oceans might be bottemless pits, deserts blacks seas and cities only ruins with walking undead and other unholy creatures. I suggest a challenge to map a region on the material (normal) plane (or grap something you've already done?) and remap it on the shadow plane. Things can get really rough and ugly there and even the distances don't have to agree. I'd really like to see some interpretations of this topic.

If you like the idea, go vote for it.

XCali also posted a suggestion to "Create a map around a significant Statue".

I was thinking today, it is always fun to create something when there is something significant of it that stirs your imagination.
So, that is why I think this one can be quite interesting. Instead of the town, ruins, city being the hero of the map. The Statue and the story around it would be the hero of the map.

Again, go vote or comment if you like the idea.

    Bookmarks

Schattentanz posted a new Bookmark 'Kai's Sci-Fi Bookmark'. Check it out here.

Remember, the Bookmarks project is ongoing for anyone to post in. If you'd like to do something small, either as a 'palette cleanser' between larger maps, or perhaps to experiment with a new style', you can do so with a bookmark. And you can print out and share with friends afterwards! You can other Guild members' bookmarks here.
