  1. Ramah,
I am new to the map making in general but I have wanted to make a map for a story I have been working on for a year and a half. I am about 1/3 of the way done with the book and would like to have a map to go with it. I have Adobe Elements and really liked your Aronbor map. I would like to make something like it. I am so lost with this though. I am good with Photoshop but could really use some direction. If you could spare some I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Much

Hi there! I noticed your post on the 'punchy colour trick in photoshop' thread about your colors appearing differently in Photoshop than they do elsewhere. I didn't want to reply and necropost, so I figured I'd tell you here.

Photoshop has its own internal color settings, so you can adjust your picture's colors to more accurately reflect your printer's output without fumbling with your monitor until everything else looks weird. In Photoshop 7.0, you can reach it by going to Edit and then Color Settings, or hit Ctrl-Shift-K. From here, you can view your color profiles, or turn color management off. Hope this helps!

Sorry for the confusion. I guess I'm misunderstanding his entire article concerning rivers. You've obviously mastered it. Mind if I e-mail you and chat about it?

    Hey mate!

I've been doing Jeremy Elford's tutorial taking your advice and am stuck on rivers. Maybe we could chat and figure it out? I'm unsure how he goes from black rivers to white ones.

    Hope to hear!

    Hiya
Thanks for your comment and congrats on your map (Vaniya) - maybe it isn't much but I absolutely loved it - what an eye for detail you have!
(and all the best for your book )

The Tumbleweed keeps on rolling...

by Ramah on 04-04-2019 at 01:44 PM
I knew this blog would be infrequent when I started it but I guess six years between posts is long enough.

Since I last updated, coding-wise, I've had bounteous times and barren times. I've had six months on and years off. I've added stuff, removed stuff, edited stuff and generally prevaricated the time away.

Some of the "Things" have changed immensely in that period of time (HillThing and TextThing) and others have hardly been touched (TreeThing and BorderControl),

Recent Progress

by Ramah on 01-05-2013 at 02:17 PM
So, I've made a little progress on the MapThing suite recently. Unfortunately it's not on HillThing though.

After recently spending an inordinately long time drawing, redrawing and shading a simple border I decided that I'd have a crack at automating some of the process. So I finally turned my attention to the newly re-christened BorderControl module for MapThing.

It's not feature-complete yet but I thought there was enough now to show a little of what it can do. So,

With the welcome post out the way...

by Ramah on 02-08-2012 at 07:24 AM
I thought I'd set out my stall as far as TreeThing is concerned.

So... what's the plan?

Well, first, a little history. As many old-timers here might know, TreeThing started out as the "Automatic Forest Generator" and was programmed by Fluesopp. It was a very simple program that took a png image and covered the non-transparent areas with trees. He very kindly made it open source and I used this as a springboard to start developing the idea in greater detail

Obligatory welcome post

by Ramah on 02-08-2012 at 06:23 AM
Hey there and welcome to Tumbleweed - an empty little part of the web that you are probably the first, and maybe only, person to visit.

I'll own up from the start - this will probably be updated infrequently. It is a little known fact (although known very well to my family) that I am an expert at starting things. Finishing them... not so much. But as I doubt there will be hordes of internet users hanging on my every word and desperate to find out what has been happening with me then
