Default The Battle of Gelor Ridge

So, I've been wanting to make a map for the battle of Gelor Ridge--from Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson. I really like how Erikson narrates the battle, its exciting and interesting. But, with all that's going on during the battle, it can be hard to piece everything together. So I've set out to make a battle map for it.

The battle location is described as a dry lakebed through which the river P'atha now runs. The lakebed is 2000 paces east-west and 4000 paces north-south. To the north there's a serrated ridge of bone white hills, to the south there's a "knotted jumble of arroyos, basoliths, screes and jagged outcroppings" as well as a pinnacle upon which a monastery sits.

This is a basic sketch of the location, contours and shading are rough because I'll replace them later with hachures

The final map is to be of a similar style to this one:

I've never read that book, but I like the style of map you're going for, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops! One comment is that, while I see your monastery sitting on a promontory sticking out into the canyon, "pinnacle" implies to me that it should be up on a higher elevation than the surrounding terrain.

After a few tries I came up with this, it's not quite the same as most hachure maps, but I feel it's good enough for a map where the terrain is of secondary concern.

EDIT: Pic is a bit jagged, not sure why.

Thanks for the reminder! I had missed that bit. I'll fix it for the hachure version.

Ooo exciting. Love the Erikson books, but it's been so long I don't remember the battle.

Great work ! Can I ask you if you have a special tool to draw those strokes or if you draw them one by one ?
