Wip Another Commission: Keep floor plans + a regional map

    Hi Folks,

Got another commission from my publisher for 6 maps.

Here is the first floor plan of the keep. Bear in mind, this is work for hire. Apart from how I interpret the authors sketch, I have very little freedom, not to mention, that while I negotiated a pay increase, the rate is still pretty low.

    Floorplan # 2

I adjusted the central section so that the main pillars line up with those on the Level 1 plan which is why it doesn't line up with the grid...

I also changed the stair direction on Level 1 to marry up with Level 2 (assuming that it is below L1) and centred the 'throne'.

    Hi Folks,

After question time with the author this is where I'm at. I've done two versions of the floor plans; 1 plain black fill for the wall and the other with a pattern, which do you prefer?

I need to check some details on the Crossfeld map with the author; I'm not sure if it's meant to be a statue at #2 or a well. If it's a well, what is #4...?

I prefer the plain black. The pattern is strong enough to distract from the actual locations.

I would also take 2 on the Crossfeld map to be a statue (the same symbol in the Sunfire Sanctum is placed appropriately for a statue as well), but 4 would be absurdly huge for a well. I would take 4 to be a tower or the remains of the wall of a tower. I assume you've already double-checked that "Crossfeld" isn't a type for "Crossfield". For that matter, what is 1 on this map? I would take them for hills, but they are so small as to be mounds of less than house size. Why would those exist inside the village wall?

Thanks mate, I tend to agree but the black is a little boring, though it does the job. I used that fill pattern for some ruined walls and it looks the goods darkened up a bit. I think I'll stick to using it for that purpose.

The authors sketch shows the traditional symbol for a well at #2, i.e. a circle with a nested, smaller solid circle infill and #4 on his sketch is pretty much as I've drawn it. He also shows a square around #2. I didn't think it would make much sense to have a well in the middle of the road....so I guessed; I will be clarifying. #1 I think is meant to be hay bales or similar, I was getting lazy and used my "hachure" brush. I'll fix that up.

    Hi Folks,

Maps have been submitted. Went with the black fill for the buildings as per rdanhenry's comments - thanks! And modified the Crossfeld map after consultation with the author, see below. The line manager and CEO both like them, so unless there are any changes these will be the final maps.

Edit: Forgot to add the last map, the Island of Sorrowskeep!

Thanks CP. They're fun to do and I'm getting quicker at them, which is good! My hourly rate has gone from a small cappuccino to a mug with a slice of raisin toast I hope to get it up to a coffee with bacon & eggs before long!

The only difficulty with these commissions is my only brief/art direction are the authors sketches, some of which are far easier to decipher than others...
