Hey everyone! After seeing the awesome pieces that everyone has submitted I thought that I should go ahead and post my idea. My concept is that as cartographers we have a lot of power, it might seem insignificant but I think it's amazing. We get to create worlds that become the image that people think of when they're exploring a new world, whether in a book or game or other. It's similar to being a writer but we convey our story through a picture. So in a way we hold the world in our hands.

Hum, with more contrast and "shiny gold" maybe.

That's a nice one Ilanthar. Confused though, what makes it brazilian-friendly? What does that mean?

Gold lands and framework are more visible this way !!
The graticules show better but I'm not as much a fan of the blue.
Golden globe/golden compass. But others may feel differently.

Glad you joined in Domino. The globe looks great.
I like the hand holding it and your concept. I agree with that sentiment.
It also made me think of a light bulb, an idea bulb like inspiration, which of course works well too.

I just noticed... at 30 pixels, the sea in Ariz' globe looks a bit like a griffin, which is cool.

Great to see more entries coming in. Ilanthar's is my favourite so far. It looks fantastic!

My choice still hangs for J.Edward at this point.

Yet, I think Domino44's is the idea with biggest potential. Did you draw the hand yourself, Domino? If you have, did you consider the globe resting on the palm of the hand, instead of the fingertips.. I would love to see that tried out.

(Concerning Ilanthar's proposal, that is an armillary sphere - it has been part of the portuguese flag since the Age of Discoveries, originally it symbolized the universe and nowadays it is normally linked with maritime discoveries, whence the brazilian reference... just thought I could provide some nation-centric expertise )

Ahah, thanks a lot Pixie, I also learned a lot from your post ! I just knew it was part of the older flag of Brazil (the Empire of Brazil if I recall well).

I like Domino's idea a lot, and well, the combination of Chick's compasses is just excellent!

Some really nice entries here, thanks everyone for contributing. I really like J.Edward and Domino's entries at full res, but a lot of the detail is lost when they are downsized. Ilanthar's idea is really unique and cool, as one might expect. However I'd have to say that just looking at the smaller size icons my favorites would be between Chick's entry and Ariz89's entry. They both scale very well (my only nitpick with Ariz89's entry has to do with the color scheme - the gold looks to "yellow" rather than gold).

    Cheers,

We could just change the *type* of compass :-)
