@DanielHasenbos: Thought so, made a tower a while ago with the same logic. It's probably safer to kick down the ladder in case of war.
@Larb: Thought so, you probably had something in mind. =)

Added a bit more and started to sketch in the main plan. I don't know whether to have a basement level or not. Or just a cistern or something.

Well, you'd have an even 6 if you did, but then you lose floor space to get down there.
I like the grass and the spikes as well.

Sketchup is a great tool for making buildings. I don't consider it cheating either. It is a great artist's tool.

I don't know whether to go full colour or do greyscale shading or maybe something in between.

You can always do greyscale, then if you're motivated you can use color, soft light, hue, multiply layers to apply color afterwards.
Sort of the reverse of normal shading over color.

And it looks great, by the way.

I think I'll do that then - it's not usually how I do colour though. So probably worth giving it a try.

My other thought was to just do it greyscale but then pick out only a few things in colour such as light sources or overly important things.

That could be cool too. Almost like spot colors [for print]... but different.
