Default WIP – some land and a bit of sea

It’s been a while since I made a map for myself, but now, I suddenly got the impulse to draw again. This is a fantasy world at roughly an early 20th century level, pre World war 1, specifically the continent where a story I’m tinkering with takes place. So far I have is a basic pencil outline, with major mountain ranges sketched in as zigzag lines. Here’s a poor phone photo because it’s late and I’m to tired to start up the scanner Quickly darkened the lines so the shapes are more visible. Watchathink, cliché design or fresh enough? Plausible layout or have I commited any fatal crimes already? (The land is coming in from the top right corner, the largest area is the sea)

Gotta be honest: looks like a bloated pelican getting ready to drop a kite into a bunch of custard.

But knowing your awesome artistic abilities I'm sure it'll all come out good in the end.

Hehe I decided I actually don't think I want bloated pelicans in this one, so here's a slightly reworked rough coastline. Also sketched in some height curves.

I'm planning to ink the coastline and rivers (not yet existing) with blue, and thinking about red height curves, a bit like this one, but even redder and less insane water:

Oh man, I LIKE bloated pelicans! (But I do like this new coastline better, so there's that...)

That's a good style to emulate too, especially for the feel/time period you're going for.

Look forward to seeing you develop this.

What?! Are we playing Rorschach test? Now I see something more like Swiss .
    Just kidding.

The new land shapes are nice, and I'm surely gonna watch this!

Hahaha, thanks guys Glad you like the new shapes. I've done some experimenting, as this is a new style for me. The top bit is my first plan, then I tried a less detailed approach and brown instead of red, and then on the bit to the right, I tried interrupting the contours to make the rivers more visible. What do you think, do you have a favorite or should I use some other variant?

Hmm. I don't like the bottom left at all. The brown just doesn't work, in my opinion. I'd have to say I like the bottom right the best, but that's a LOT of work.
