    Wip Godspeed

Starting out on a new mapping adventure. I wanted to create a galactic map for a RPG setting in the making just to get a feel. These regions and names are placeholders and can be changed "easily". The milkyway image I painted some time ago so why not put it to use. Hope this is going to work. Updates will be slow because creation is an ongoing work with a friend of mine and we canīt meet too often because of RL.

Excellent solution to an old problem. I'd be happy to follow this.

Magical word is "Smart Object" in Photoshop CS6, donīt know about older versions. I can work on my flat topdown image and just update the distortet version. As it is a smart object I can distort and scale as I like, the image never degrades as it is alway calculated from the original base image. Pretty neat software solution to make my life easier.

Great start Troedel, I'm gonna watch this with interest! And seeing your explanation just makes me jealous of PS CS6...

I believe that Smart Objects were introduced with CS2, and Smart Filters in CS3.

I don't have PS. Does something similar exists in Gimp?

An alternative method would be to use a 3D graphics package (like Anim8or or Blender). Use the flat map as a surface texture on a flat object and tilt it any way you want before rendering.

Map Object and map to a plane.

Although this conversation was actually really vague so I'm not 100% sure what you are actually taking about.
