Wip Fort Ste Catherine / Fellowing tutorial J. Roberts

    Hello !

For my last map, I tried to fellow the famous tutorial of J. Roberts (here)

I had many surprises, as I had never tried to fellow this tutorial before... and some things (as colors) were not as I expected.

So, after having finished my map (there) I decided to make a short, little and simple map, fellowing step by step the tutorial (I took the same parchment), to be sure to understand well his technique. That made my day ! I still will try to add a frame and some labels tomorrow

So, I can ask no credit in this map, it's all the work of J. Roberts, but I'm glad to have such good teachers to learn me to make maps ! Here it is :

(the map is remotely inspired by a fort (à la Vauban) which was destroyed in 1601, just near my home... but it's really far from the reality)

Really nice map ! A little question though. Did you put your line work layer on top ? It seems the light layer of the cliff is on top of the line work.

    You're welcome

Writing is pretty slow. I seem to get a bit distracted by continually feeling the urge to go and have a look at all the pretty maps on a certain very well known site! LOL

About your latest WIP: I can't see anything wrong with it at all. A very attractive little map

Very nice JO, especially with the border done! And I think you should take credit for this map. The technique may not be yours, but the map is made by no other than yourself.

Hey JO (wanted to do this for a while ),

I can see a little something that could better the map. In some places, the shadows of the buildings are round where they should be sharp edged. The building seems to be hoovering above the terrain. I'm wondering if you used an automatic outter shadow. If it's the case, it can be a good guide for shadowing buildings but you'll need to redo the shadows with a sharp edge for some of them.

    Thanks Thomas !

The user name was not chosen over this famous song... I can't take credit on that either :-D

You're right about the shadows... As it wasn't precised in the tutorial I fellowed step by step, I admit I was sloppy on those buildings.

But I'm glad you pointed out these glitches : the shadows were round, as the building's corners... And as there is no point in making a map if you're not making it well, I went back to the map and gave those buildings the corners and the shadows they deserve.
Thanks again for making the comment : without you I would have let this the way it was, and it was not clean... Now I think it's much better, and I'm more happy with my map !

As my hollydays are coming at end, I'll be a lot less mapping... but more reading the forum. I'm looking forward to fellow your work, specially next november.

    Thanks and take care,

    Joël

(that's the real explanation of the JO...)
