Thread: Igneous Isles

    Wip Igneous Isles

I am trying out my first solid attempt at drawing a map with a stylus in Photoshop. So, unlike my physical media maps, you can all lay on the criticism and I can actually respond! Hooray!

This is inspired by a recent trip to the Galapagos, which are rugged hotspot-style shield volcanoes. The feature I built the coastline around is the double-ringed caldera in the southwest. I'm planning to finish the ring in the east and put a big shield in the middle. The north and south coasts would be lava flows. I definitely want to place some rivers and forests, too, to practice my technique.

That's a pretty good start ! I dunno why but some mountains seem askew. That must be my eye because I checked and they are even. Maybe an optic trick because of the white space... I look forward to see more !

Do you think the lines are heavier on one side of the mountains than the other? I'm still getting used to my stylus!

I guess some of them might have an unevenness on the feet height showing some kind of altitude difference between left and right (I had seen well). also, some are really leaning.
    Here's what I mean (it's faint).

I think I finished the major mountain ranges. I also went on a hunt for uneven feet.

Love the land shapes you created, jshoer, particularly the calderas in the sw. Looking forward to seeing how you progress on this!

I'm not a volcanologist, but I think it looks like a good start, j'. I like the perspective you brought out of it by drawing more linework on the "front" and "sides" and minimizing it toward the "back". Nice work and can't wait to see it with shading and color!
