I took a much brighter photo - here's the result with the texture, and with the color layers skewed to match (though I think I have some work ahead of me fine-tuning them):

This looks great, Joseph. I think the lighter version is an improvement. The map itself is lovely.

BLAM-O! A first cut at coloring most stuff. I do plan to differentiate the undergrowth foliage from the background grass.

Even better with colors. And some shades of green in the grass areas is what I would have suggested.

What a lovely image. I especially love the detail of the semi-transparency of each of the waterfalls.

Thanks, Ilanthar. I'm going to work on more variations in the grass green, but in the meantime, here's some more overall work (including effects on the waterfalls and the wood smoke):

As it is, it makes a perfect map for a hi-res 8 or 16 bits game of old. I'm sure you'll sort your color problem with some shading. Keep up the great work !

Here is some more work on the border to finish out the coloring, and I added some bright highlights (after seeing ChickPea post Tilvarel Valley on the twitter account). I also added some yellow to the grass under the pine trees to make it more of a fallen-pine-needle color. What advice do you all have for adding variation to the open grassland? I was thinking of taking a mottled brush and doing some burn/dodge on it, but I don't quite think that's the full answer...

Looking at the version from the last post, I got the feeling that the coloring makes the map seem a little too cartoonish for what I was hoping. What do you all think of that version compared to turning the opacity of all the color layers to about half of what they were?
