Map August 2018 Challenge: An Englishman's journey through 17th century Italy

It isn't too late to join, is it? After all, the month of August has 31 days, so there's still pleeeenty of time...

I am going to suggest the passage of time by mapping a journey from Venice to Rome, and then to the island of Elba. The voyage takes place in 1665, and the route was based on the maps of Italy found in Atlas Maior by Joan Blaeu.

I started working on it about a week ago, but then I didn't have time for it for several days, so I wasn't even sure whether I will have time to finish it this month. But today I picked it up again and completed the pencil sketch and started inking. The plan is to get the inking done today or tomorrow, then hopefully I will be able to add watercolors too.

    Size: A3
    Ink + watercolor -- hopefully

For now, here's the pencil sketch...

Pretty much done with the inking. Next, labels and shading...

44 labels and about 3000 shading lines later, here's the final inked version.

    That's just beautiful, Nopkin

Are you going to risk tinting it?

And please don't ruin it by trying to do it super fast just because someone asked

    Thanks!

I've already started coloring, we'll see how it turns out. I'm not going to rush it, but it shouldn't take very long anyway, so hopefully I'll manage to finish it in time.

This is wonderful! I've been so impressed with the ribbon maps that have popped up now and then in these challenges.

Thanks! Yes, the compass roses that are on land will stay simple like that.
