If this fails, I may try some of that masking fluid. Didn't really want to spring for a bottle when I've never needed it before. I'm sure it would come in handy again though.

On the bright side, the test is looking promising. Here's some pics of the masked off area with dried rubber cement, then with masking removed it has nice crisp edges, and finally with some French Ultramarine spread across the whole area. Now to let the paint dry, remove the cement, and hope it doesn't leave a residue.

The composition of the map on your sketch looks promising! I can't offer any advice on masking techniques, but I'm curious to see the results...

I love this, it's like watching research and having a nice map at the end I'm really excited to see how this turns out.

I don't know if it will be a nice map, but at the very least, we will have learned something!

You're doing all manner of scientific stuff and there's me moaning that my PC doesn't run software lighting fast.

You have every right to moan. Computer issues can be, and usually are, immensely frustrating. And it seems just when you've got a machine sorted and running smoothly, it's obsolete. -_-

Looks like I'll be painting this weekend. Trepidation level is at about 8.5. I've literally just picked up watercolors and I'm quite artistically challenged. This will be the first proper thing I've painted.

Good luck! Watercolors are SCARY but when it works it's awesome! Just remember that we're all here for you and even in the worst case scenario, you'll have done an experiment and learned. And I have found that the worst case actually happens very rarely.
