Thread: Tutorial Recommendations?

  1. #1

    Question Tutorial Recommendations?

Hi all. I am looking for recommendations on what the best tutorials are to go through to do the following process:

    1) Create continental landmasses in Gimp/Photoshop (I have both)
{EDIT} I will also want to import the base image into GPlates to help with mountain and island location
    2) Create a decent starting bump/heightmap for those landmasses
{EDIT} Then I'll will also want to use GProjector

I then want to take that and import the finished shapes and heightmap into Wilbur to convert into MDR to import to FT3. From there I'll use the Israh tutorial to refine the details. (Or any other tutorial that may be more applicable?)

Part of my issue is that there are SO many tutorials floating around that I have no idea what is best for attempting this process.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't know about using GProjector or GPlates, but Arsheesh made a pretty popular tutorial on how to make a hightmap in Gimp and use it with Wilbur.

You have not chosen the easy path to map making but there are others who have tried similar processes. There really is no set tutorial that’s going to walk you through that whole process but I’ve found that some of the best resources and tips can be found in the WIP threads of other members...Read absolutely everything that Pixie has ever written https://www.cartographersguild.com/s...archid=4404897 and pay attention to others who post to his threads, allot of people who are interested in Pixies work also have interesting WIP threads which you can learn allot from.

Also read everything Charerg has ever written, and his tutorial on G.Plates https://www.cartographersguild.com/s...light=G.Plates which is really helpful. There really isn’t allot of tutorials out there for G.Plates but he does a good job of walking you through it and is always helpful if you have questions. He also has one of the most beautifully detailed fantasy height maps I’ve ever seen so make sure to check out his World of Aduhr https://www.cartographersguild.com/s...ad.php?t=31774 if you haven’t already, it’s absolutely stunning in it’s complexity and there is allot to be learned from his WIP thread as well.

There are also a few more tutorials on using G.Plates for con worlds but I’ll have to search for them, when I manage to dig up the links I’ll be sure to post them here.

    Good luck to you...

    Thanks for the replies.

I am in the process of reading through Pixie and Chareg's voluminous works. It's SO much to take in. Same goes for the number of tutorials floating around. I am currently starting a WIP thread starting with the absolute basics and hoping to grow from there.

hi Im bit confused of all the software used for cartography, I recently do not have or cant use pc for cartography, so software usage is not important for me now, the only thing I can do as a digital art is to use my Samsung tablet, if there is a android apps for creating, so which do you recommend guys or eventually should I sell my Samsung, save a bit get a Wacom or iPad, no idea what would be best solution and if even tablet is effective for such work and if isnt worth it to buy really good laptop as I travel very often. Thanks for eventual suggestions
