Default February 2019 Challenge: As yet unnamed

    Hey all,
Chlodowech commissioned me a fortified village on a ridge in a narrow valley. It was pretty much up for my own interpretation, so I decided to draw a feudal japanese themed map. Many things in this picture will certainly change, (this has already made it as a sketch through five papers, not including concepts). I'll be using watercolour and ink, and I intend to take everything slowly, calmly (if you know me and my maps you should know what I mean...).
I'm also not settled on a name yet... Hopefully I'll think of something soon.
This is primarily inspired by Akae (obviously), and Francesca Baerald (watercolour = Baerald ).
So, right, here's the current sketch. Seeing how scruffy it kinda got, I guess this one here might be a colour test, and I'll re transfer the drawing onto another paper and do the final job there.

Thanks Kell!As you might guess, the clouds are inspired by Baerald's feudal japan maps.

Thanks Greason! I do hope it works out well... Edit: so sorry, my naughty phone typed treason instead of Greason

No WIP for now. I'm waiting for a go ahead from Chlodowech to put on the ink.

this looks fantastic! Two suggestions, and they are really only stray thoughts. But don't most Japanese scrolls go from top to bottom, instead of side to side? Also... is there going to be a way to get down to the valley from the ridge?

I love that you mentioned you are going to be using watercolors! I saw some water color maps years ago, that I absolutely fell in love with! I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes!

If you're talking about the orientation of the map, vertical and horizontal ("portrait" and "landscape") art are both found in traditional Japanese art. If you mean the scroll-style art on the map that will presumably hold text, I have never seen that type of labeling on Japanese art. Text is typically either left uncontained or is boxed quite simply with a thin-lined rectangle (which is, indeed, normally vertically oriented) or maybe boxed in drawn bamboo.
