    Map Tidelands Map

This is my first made-up map. Means it is not a real place.

I thought of some sort of quest or storyline going on there. It could need a lot more detail, but i got lost in the making. Maybe start again eventually.

    i love the illustrative style.

When I go to add textures to a big flat map, I'll flatten it as much as possible and save it to a new file, so I have the map available to return to if I want to make changes. Alternatively, using a program like Other World Mapper leaves the textures always editable, mimicking vector with raster images.

    thx for the feedback.
Coming from fast and simple black and white illustrations i am having a hard time with these complex files. I am now stuck with the paths /roads.
I will put it aside for a few days to hopefully find out what i want it to look like.

This is a really good start. You are starting to get into better shaded relief and that is a good thing.

Regarding texture, there are many ways to do it. But one way I can suggest if you are using a program like Photoshop or Gimp is, make a layer above the color and throw in a texture on multiply or overlay mode and place the Layer on low opacity. This will give a hint of texture to the map without bogging it down with many layers of textures.

For future reference when go on to a next project, try having a single ocean texture layer and a land layer texture. The above then is a very useful way to tackle the map.
    eg.

    Top Layer: Trees
Second to top Layer: Buildings, Objects, Rivers
Next layer: Land Texture (Multiply or overlay mode, low opacity)
Above mid layer: Ocean Texture (Multiply or Overlay mode, low opacity.)
    Mid layer: Shading(Shadows)
    Above bottom layer: Color Layer
Bottom layer: a bucket fill mid tone color just to grab any empty spaces.

This is JUST a layout of what you can try for a map. It is NOT mandatory at all. In fact I veer off quite a lot to experiment with stuff. So, it is just a basic idea.

Most important thing. And listen carefully to this.
Have fun. Cartography is suppose to be fun and there is always room to experiment and to grow.

i love the idea of little critters and making a legend of where the little creatures like snakes, snails and fish can be found.

But i gave up on the map for now. i just got stuck. Call a test.

Nice! That has a fun, loose style while still being clean.
