So I found this artifact in the dusty back storerooms and requested a chance to clean and research it. The tag said scrimshaw on whale tooth, but it's half again as large as any other whale tooth in the archives. Then I happened on the runes on the edge of the map that were not mentioned at all in the original description. I wonder...

I am working on some way to "antique" the scrimshaw. It looks a bit to clean to be 1300 years old.

I am also having trouble with making the text look like it is written on the paper. To me, it looks like it is floating above the paper.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

The paper shading suggests that it is old and wrinkled and/or warped.
The text is crisp, which is at odds with the implied age of the paper,
and it isn't distorted by the implied uneven surface of the paper.

Having the text and paper match (distorted text or fresh paper) will ground the text on the paper.

This is awesome! How did you achieve the carved letters? Bevel/emboss? If you're still having issues with the text on paper, I find that just lowering the fill % stops the "floating above the paper" issue and makes it look older.

The carved letters I used a bump map on the bone layer using the text layer as input. I lowered the Elevation and Depth to 1 and raised the Waterlevel mark to max (1.000).
I'm using the latest version of GIMP (2.10.14).

    PS. Thanks for the comment

Great idea/approach. Gonna be some tough voting this time round.
