Thread: Regional/District Map

    Default Regional/District Map

    G'day,

I am currently in need of a skilled cartographer to produce a regional/district map based on a real-world location of approximately 13x10km. A method of indicating smaller geopolitical borders (manorial estates or fiefs) within that region that doesn't interfere too much with the overall style of the map would be preferred. The maps produced would be for private use at my game table and the copyright would remain with the artist.

I have never considered having a map commissioned previously, but I'm afraid I'm just about as sick of my crude hand-drawn maps as my players are. Though I've owned the full CC3+ suite of programs for several years, I've had neither the time nor inclination to ever try to learn the ins and outs. As such I am unfamiliar with issues such as what details need to be provided, what going rates for cartography services are, etc.

I would prefer a cartographer who also specializes in town/village maps, preferably one who is familiar with the style of such maps found in publications from the Harn setting, as my next step after a regional map would be drilling down and producing maps for each town and village.

I'll be happy to provide further details and discuss pricing through email @ steakplace-at-gmaildotcom.

    Best Regards,

    ArashiCC

    Ingrates!

You might want to share a Google maps link or a historical map of the region.

You will want to know how big you want the map printed, since this is the main thing that adjust my pricing and how long it'll take. City maps are one of the more expensive types you can have made, but a close up region will range in price based on how many roads and unique features an artist will need to position. Depending what's in that 13x10 km range, it might be a cheaper map or a more expensive map so it's hard to give a quote, I'd thus probably begin negotiations by seeing how you felt about $300, but without a density reference I'm not quite sure how long it would take to create from this writeup alone.

My portfolio of assorted fantasy maps can be viewed online.

Alas I do not know the Harn setting. Welcome to the guild. I love your writing style. Cheers.

Thank you for the response, Tiana!

My initial post was intended to avoid information overload, but perhaps that was a mistake on my part. I'll take the opposite approach this time around.

About a year ago I began a new tabletop campaign using the Harnmaster system from Columbia Games. Although Harnmaster has been around for several decades, the campaign I began at that point was inspired heavily by a recent computer RPG from Warhouse Studios in Prague called Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The game itself has some rather (in my opinion) stunningly beautiful maps (https://guides.gamepressure.com/king...e.asp?ID=43503 as an example of a "city map"), and I suppose I could have used what was already available, but I wanted 1) a larger geographical area to play in with more village/hamlet locations; and 2) to be able to integrate the area into my existing campaign world, which meant changing historical/real-world location names for those appropriate to a non-historical setting.

The KC map is itself modeled off a small region in Bohemia, modern-day Czech Republic. Here is an example of the in-game maps versus their real life counterparts: https://imgur.com/a/udmnN

My intention would be have a map, or a set of maps if that would work better, that focused on the region in question, based predominantly off the geography of the region found on Google Maps, but with some of the necessary "reforestation" to represent the region prior to modern agricultural capacity. I would like to be able to define manorial borders (fiefs) based on the geopolitical/land borders -- which admittedly are not at all accurate -- that google produces. I'd prefer a contiguous map of the region, but if it works better to break them down into individual "manorial maps" I'd consider going that route.

    These manorial borders would be:

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/28...203!4d14.92939

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/28...8!4d14.8967421

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/%C...8!4d14.9726915

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/St...3!4d14.8461771

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/28...3!4d14.9488735

As for the city maps, I was able to dig up some examples.

    http://batintheattic.blogspot.com/20...of-kensla.html
    http://www.aedificium.org/Maps/Bilby.gif
    http://www.aedificium.org/Maps/Harworth.gif

Of importance to me in regards to town/local maps would be details like the individual garden plots of each cottage, representation of historical open-field or strip farming techniques, etc. These local maps don't have to be "beautiful" or "fantastical"... merely useful and semi-historically accurate in the village or town they're attempting to depict.

Hopefully this isn't information overload. As I mentioned previously, I've never even considered commissioning an artist previously, so I'm a bit clueless on the whole process.

I would not consider that to be 'information overload' but just the right amount to get a solid vision for what it is you want to create.

That original art though... (nosebleed) That first map you shared is GORGEOUS.
