Woah, I unleashed a storm! But don't worry, guys, this commission is neither frustrating nor a scam.
In fact, I was already acquainted with the guy who commissioned me this map, so the base was good. And I always was charging him hourly. I only learned afterwards that this was not the fashion, as this is my first commission ever. In the meantime, it makes it just awesome, because the guy is nice, he knows what he's paying for, and I'm getting paid for everything I do. So no trouble! ^^
I hope this clears up what began to make my commissionner look like a fraud and an ahole. I assure you he is not. My commission is nooby but we both get the best out of it! That being said, I'm rrrrrrrreally happy I read about your pricing tips and I'll make sure I make it into a real thing when I set up this commercial page on my blog. Thanks everybody!

Coming along nicely!
If you are charging hourly then the request is completely fine (and explains why you keep noting how much time you've spent on some of your posts) but yes, I think most of us, even the pros, tend to charge by piece since most clients like to know what they're getting in for. But you can certainly persist on charging an hourly rate. It would be better for you. And better for us, it's just harder to negotiate and keep an hourly client for an artwork than it is to negotiate a set rate.
I think it's coming along nicely. If anything bugs me about the range, it's the vertical one on the right, and it's not the mountains themselves, but that I expect to see a few islands as the range continues into the ocean but is now flooded out. A very easy addition, since you wouldn't have to alter the mountains but just add a couple of peaks that have become islands.

I'm keeping details for the end to keep the hourly price fair. But as the artist, I would certainly add lots of them, mainly irregular altitude patches and islands. Thanks guys, we'll see how this goes. ^^
