May 2020 Challenge: The Citadel of Avenio

I wasn't sure I could find enough time to participate in this one, but things are coming along in a rather satisfactory way, so here we go !

This piece is based on ancient maps of Avignon. For this challenge, I chose to move a little further from my comfort zone by choosing a SF setting some of you will probably find familiar.

While keeping some of the most famous elements like the palace, the bridge and the walls, i took some liberties with their original design.

I'm still working on improving it. The color and the labels are on the way. I hope you'll like it !

That bridge to that rock reminds me more of the Spanish city of Ronda. (but it looks awesome nonetheless)
What happened to your SF version of Avignon? Why is it suddenly on top of a steep mountain?

That bridge is a new one, which is similar to the one connecting Avignon to Villeneuve nowadays. Behind it, you can spot an old destroyed bridge, which is a reference to the actual Pont Saint-Bénézet.

To be honest, the main reason why I chose to change the topography is because it was fun to draw and I thought it looked interesting.

Lore-wise, I guess a great river would be an odd sight in the 41st millenium Terra. Centuries of conflict changed the face of the city which is now surrounded by a gigantic crater.
