The scraper looks for these manual ### tags but it could look at some of the vBulletin stuff too. For example we have the atlas awards finished maps scraper which does already look at the date for the finished maps and produce the thumbnails for the specified years maps only. But we *might* (as I have never tested this) have it so that it could look at the vBulletin post tags and then categorize them but it does mean that the map needs to be tagged and we know that most people dont tag thair map enough and also it would mean that we would need to restrict the tag set to a limited range which is very unlikely. Also if the users tagged a map, instead of a mod then you might have them tag it with everything under the sun to put the map into extra categories.

I dont know of a really good solution.

Maybe have a winning category of best tagged map /s

As for the categories what you need is just that you have similar maps grouped together so that, for example, someones nicely drawn black and white pen line old school map is not blasted out of the running by a well rendered colour artistic floral bordered etc map. Whilst those decorative bordered maps are utterly fab in their own way it was not the intention of the old schoolers to make anything like that - but they are both hand drawn and possibly in the same category. Its the intent that is important. If you intend to draw a city or a sci-fi scene, or a simple line art, or realistic, or cartographic style and every time some super floral border map keeps winning in each of the categories because the border artwork is so good then its not driving the idea of best in class. So if one were intending to make a book atlas cartographic style then the border might be expected to be simple with graduations and clean lines. If making a historical map, then floral borders might be just what is needed. But if both maps are of a continent and both maps get into a regional map category or hand drawn category then mixing the two seems wrong to me. Well, lets say its only wrong if there is only a category of continent rather than categories that could split them better, since no old school map could ever win in any category like that and it would be likely that fine art maps would win all of the categories. In other words, those maps intentionally self restricting their style to match an intended style are at a disadvantage to those maps who are drawn with no self imposed restrictions. The problem is to come up with a set of categories but an old school map of a continent is still a continent and you can slice n dice the field of all maps in so many ways.
