The map and all these little details already look very good, I'm waiting to see how it's going to turn with watercolor! I'm pretty sure it's going to be awesome.

I don't have advises about it as I use pencils, but try the color in some other piece of paper looks definitly like a good idea.

Use watercolor only on watercolor paper. Or ar least mixed media paper. If you dont really know, make a test first of how pencil, paper and watercolor are going together.

    beautiful artwork.

Thanks for the advise and encouragement, everyone!

I'm loving the return to pencil, I forgot how much more detail I can cram into a piece. I really am trepidous of starting watercolor though, but I've been practicing a lot of different techniques in the mean time. I've got my main colors picked out, which next step is to play around with them and see how they mix, then I think I'm going to take the plunge.

So as it stands I just have a scanned version as an update, but it provides some continuity.

I should have a swatch and basic tester islands done tonight, and I think I'll be diving in tomorrow.

    Greetings!

Got some color on! I decided the rivers should be the first order of business being that they are the commission request. Definitely gave it some life and differentiation!

I still have to put the finishing lines on the bulk of the mountains, but the base layers are done. I'm happy with how they're turning out!

Next will be hills, then trade routes and cities.

It gets better land better ! Funny to see that, with the colors, your map takes a whole other dimension, it’s much more easy to read and really eye catching ! Good job !

Thanks again! I do love how the piece gets enveloped in color as the different shades come in. Contrasting between the darks and lights that reveal the landscapes are my favorite.

Mountains and hills done, small lake/ponds as well. My neck hurts from hunching over so much haha, worth it. Still have a lot more to do, but a break may be in order.

PS Kidding on the hills being done, have to shade still.

It's starting to look pretty lively with the trade routes in place. I've moved on to forests, which is just taking it to another level. Gotta say, I really love watercolors.
