Default Plotting coordinates by 1800 Surveyor

    Hi
I am writing a book about my ancestor James Meehan. He was a surveyor in Australia from 1800 - 1822. He did several explorative trips to various places using the gunter's chain and compass. In his field book he wrote down 100's of coordinates such as S40W15. The S40W represents the compass reading South-west at 220 degrees. The 15 represents the distance in chains that is 15 chains is 301.75 metres. What I am hoping to achieve is to plot each reading and map his entire trip. What I need help with is finding the software to do it.
Can you help in any way?
    Regards
    Peter Bradley
