Default June 2023 Challenge: pencil shaded relief region

Decided to use this challenge to practice some top down shaded relief techniques, using pencil to start though not sure if this will be the finished piece or if I'll have time to try something else as well. I printed the dots page and slipped it underneath the sketchbook page. They will possibly be cities or capital cities, but it's not set in stone yet.

I have absolutely no patience or talent for shaded relief of any sort. But digging what you got so far, just gotta remember not to bury my chew toys by accident.

Thanks! If successful at this one I think it'll be the first I've ever completed. Haha The pups are loving theirs!

It's looking good so far. I like the top-down perspective. I might try this style in the future. Looking forward to the finished product.

Thanks Kai! It's a nice relaxing style to draw, once you settle into it.

The attention to detail to even attempt something like shaded relief... much less finish it... much less to hand draw it...

    Is impressive. Hope you finish.

It's looking more than promising ! Pencil is the best I think for playing with opacity efficiently, and you're mastering it.

I don't know about "mastering" haha but I'm hoping I can make something at least reasonably finished that approaches half-decent ... I'm loosely referencing bits of the archived relief maps at shadedreliefarchive.com for inspiration and I can say with certainty it's not going to be anywhere near that nice, but I'm trying my best and learning stuff, so I'm happy with it, and I appreciate the support very much thank you!

Here's a little bit of update...

From what I can see it is coming along just fine. And it is always good to learn new techniques and styles. Maybe not a master yet, but the potential is there.
