• End of year challenges

We've had a few challenges winding up recently, with many fantastic entries.

Annual Challenge Winner: City of Hills by Tainotim

This was our first ever year-long challenge, beginning late January, 2015. There was no particular criteria. The goal was simply for entrants to produce their finest work. The challenge closed early December with voting running all month. The winner, by a clear margin, was Tainotim's magnificent hand-drawn map "City of Hills". We offer our warmest congratulations to Tainotim for his well-deserved win. You can view the WIP thread here.

Award Badge for the Annual Challenge

Originally, we planned to create a platinum version of the normal compass badge awarded to Lite and Regular challenge winners. However, given the unique nature of the Annual Challenge, we decided to open it to the community instead. Guilders were asked not only to create a badge that reflected the prestige of winning the annual challenge, their entry also had to look good at 30 pixels. Despite the tricky nature of the task, we received many excellent entries and the community voted for their favourite.

Our congratulations go to J.Edward for his 'Golden Globe', and we hope Tainotim is pleased with his award.

November/December Challenge Winner: Umi No Toride by J.Edward

The Regular Challenge, running for two months this time, was 'Commission a Guilder'. Entrants formed a team of two people, with each participant 'commissioning' their partner to create a map based on a briefing they provided.

We had so many fantastic entries for this challenge and the standard was incredibly high. Once voting commenced, one entry quickly stood out as favourite, and we must again congratulate J.Edward for his winning entry 'Umi No Toride'. His team partner, Larb, commissioned him to create a fortress out at sea, accessible only by boat, but not on an island. I hope everyone would agree this piece was a very worthy winner and J.Edward collects his second gold compass, in addition to his other awards.

    Other Challenge News

    Dec/Jan Lite Challenge

The Dec/Jan Lite Challenge still has a week or so to run, and the theme this month is 'Map Star Wars'. If the Force in strong in you, there's still time to join in. More details and current entries can be found in the Lite Challenge folder.

    January Regular Challenge

The January regular challenge has just been announced and this month Guilders are asked to re-map a pulp world. Diamond says...

By 'pulp world', I mean the setting of one of the great old adventures from the early to middle part of last century:

    -Buck Rogers
    -Barsoom
-Gor (in the early, pre-misogynistic days)
    -Tarzan's Africa
    -Pellucidar
    -She
-just about any of Lin Carter's books/worlds

By 're-map', I mean that it's pretty wide open. You can do a world map, regional map, town, spaceport, whatever, as long as it relates in some way to the pulps.

If you're not familiar with ANY of that, some quick online research will yield you at least some image results. Also, I'm sure there are/were some non-American/British pulp adventure/worlds, and feel free to use any of those you know of as well.

So get your retro thinking caps on and let's see what you can come up with. The regular challenge closes on 31st January. More info and entries in this thread.

That's all the challenge news for now. We look forward to seeing some exciting maps over the next few weeks.
