Default Free to use Raster / Vector / GIS real world data

Here is a list of sites which has free to use real world data - but please check the site itself to make sure you are aware of all conditions of use and whether it's still free:

Blank Map - Has world, continent and country maps in EPS, PDF, GIF and PNG formats. A real treasure trove.

Dmaps.com - Lots of maps but all in .gif format (no vector so far as I can see)

Education Place - Lots of continental blank maps and some US historical blank maps too.

Diva - GIS data sets, under a CC licence.

Natural Earth Data - GIS datasets and some raster shaded relief.

    Shoreline Coastline database
    - GIS database

Maps for Free - Based on Google Earth

Please feel free to add to the list!

I would also recommend OpenStreetMap Data that you can download and you can specify the extent of the area for data extraction. Vector data available in many file format.

Don't know if it has been mentioned already, but for world maps, there's Demis Map Online. It offers quite a lot of options and information.
Select an area with your mouse and it will automatically zoom on it. From there, you can choose different option/menu on the left
