Hi there. Well we have a tutorials section which focuses more around using certain apps to create a specific look and feel for a map. By far the best way is to get stuck in and make some maps and then when you get stuck ask for help in that specific manner as then we can all see what the issue is. Most of us here use a paint package and treat the map as an artwork but sometimes people do get more involved with the GIS side of it. Since we mostly do fantasy work here then GIS doesnt really need to be important but some people do take the fantasy maps to another level and try to get it all geo-referenced too.

In the UK we have the old Parish maps which are a good reference and you can usually get a copy of them for free somewhere. Often archeological maps are about too. If you want to make them then probably specific instruction is required for them over and beyond the map making aspect.

But I am sure others will provide some more YouTube links too.

    Default Mini projects

    Thanks for rapid reply.

I know I can learn from the fantasy and gaming aspect here. My kids are into gaming and one is in visual design so can call on them.

I’d like to develop my own style over time. Hand and digital.

Intake your point on just getting stuck in.

I’d also like to “map out” a route of learning that builds over time. A series of
    Mini projects maybe.

    1. Find an old map
    2. Trace it and create a pencil base map
    3. Digitise the map
    4. Play with typography
    ….

    Thanks
