Question How do I turn my large scale world map into something 3d?

I have created a large scaled map of a world but to help my fully understand the distance between places, along with understanding if the climates are right in certain areas...

How can I turn my 2d map into something 3d and possible onto a sphere?

You probably meant small scale map of the world. A large scale map would be a city map or floorplans.

for an isometric view you need to have a height map that can be converted into a mesh or used as a displacement map
    like this

a height map imported into blender
