Welcome!
The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.
Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.
If this is your first visit, be sure to check out the FAQ. You will have to register before you can post or view full size images in the forums.
The Lost Town of Tegid Foel.2
My very quickly done entry for the July 2020 Map Challenge, Map a Fairy Tale. I chose one from my Father's Homeland of North Wales, the Lost Town of Tegid Foel. All words but the title are in the Modern North Welsh language. Tomen y Bala - A burial mound that's in the centre of the modern town of Bala, but in the early days after Rome's retreat from Briton, it would have been on the northern edge. Bala - Shown here as a small village, it's said to have been either started or increased by the survivors of Tegid Foel, it's a modern day town in the RealyReal World. Llyn Tegid - Lake Bala - In Welsh Llyn is Lake, though Tegid doesn't translate directly to Bala (which is an older Brythonic word than Tegid), Teg in Welsh means beautiful, so maybe Tegid Foel was a pretty man, though he was cruel as a ruler. Afon Dyfrdwy - The River Dee - It has an interesting feature in which hydrologist (supposedly) can tell the difference in the water of the lake, and the area in which the river flows through the lake to it's exit. Yr Wyddfa - the Mountain of Snowdon - The highest peak in Wales, the word Snowdon actually comes from the Saxon words for snow and hill (anything to make us sound less impressive!). In Welsh tradition, it's said to be the burial place of one the race of giants that Bran the Blessed came from. This was rended in Inkarnate, with some custom colours/textures designed by myself.
