The Cartographers’ Guild is a forum created by and for map makers and aficionados, a place where every aspect of cartography can be admired, examined, learned, and discussed. Our membership consists of professional designers and artists, hobbyists, and amateurs—all are welcome to join and participate in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge.

Although we specialize in maps of fictional realms, as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing), many Guild members are also proficient in historical and contemporary maps. Likewise, we specialize in computer-assisted cartography (such as with GIMP, Adobe apps, Campaign Cartographer, Dundjinni, etc.), although many members here also have interest in maps drafted by hand.

This is great!! How do you go about creating your own tiles? I'm a newbie here, and read the tutorials, but this all seems so daunting.

This one was created in an app called Genetica. Its not a free app, but I've used it so much since I bought it that I consider it well worth the purchase. Be aware, however, that the forum is very silent, and many people have warned me that it may eventually become abandonware.

Its possible to create hand drawn seamless textures in Krita just by hitting the W key which toggles between ordinary image mode and an infinite seamless extent. There are other seamless texture apps out there, but be very careful you don't fall into the trap of buying ones that have already become abandonware, and for which you will not receive a registration key, even though the money is readily accepted!

Ready made seamless textures can be obtained from many sites, but perhaps the best one is Textures.com, where you can pick up 15 textures a day free of charge as long as you register on the site. The free ones are all about 1000 px square. If you need better resolutions you may have to pay for them.

However, if you particularly fancy something that you just can't find, or just can't make, tell me about it in a PM and I'll see if I can rustle something up for you. Be prepared to give me quite a detailed description
