"Cladonia cristatella" by Chashio, winner of September 2016 challenge

    September Challenge Results

We owe thanks to Guild member Neyjour for September's challenge. She created a lovely graphic depicting Fungal Colour Palettes, shown below (you can see the original here). Guilders were challenged to pick one of the palettes and create a map using only those colours.

    The challenge rules were simple:

    1. Pick a color palette from Neyjour's lovely selections. One palette only! Use it to create your map - any kind of map at all.
    2. Post it in the first post of your thread.
    3. You must use EVERY color in the palette, and you CANNOT use any other color.

This rather tricky limitation didn't deter, as we had a fantastic response with a wide variety of maps in all different styles.

Some of the palettes Guild members worked with included...

Our winning palette was "British Soldiers" used to stunning effect by Chashio in her entry "Cladonia cristatella", a beautiful painterly map created in Artrage. This wasn't an easy palette to work with, so extra to kudos to Chashio for pulling it off in a masterly style. Chashio wins her first gold compass, so huge congrats for that. You can see the work-in-progress thread here.

We have to give honourable mentions to our runners-up...

Coming in (with a very close) second, was "Kazad Dwavi Realms" by Carbus. This map used the cool blue tones of the "Hygrophorus Caeruleus" palette to create an icy winter wonderland.

Third place went to Mouse with her first ever challenge entry. She used the "Gymnopus Perforans" palette to create "Gymnopus P" a lovely perspective map with raspberry tones.

Thank you again to everyone who entered. It's always fantastic to see Guild members push their mapmaking skills into new territories, and we hope everyone who entered enjoyed the challenge.

    October 2016 Regular Challenge

It's October and that means only one thing: Halloween! In honour of the spooky month, this month's challenge theme is 'Vampires!' Diamond says...

Create a map in any style that has to do with vampires. That's it! No other restrictions!

    Some suggestions:

-something really on-point, like Castle Dracula
-maps of towns, forts, regions, etc from Justin Cronin's Passage trilogy
-the space vampire ship from the movie Lifeforce
-Neville's house from I Am Legend
-Dracula's journey from Transylvania to London
-an alternate history map of an Earth where vampires control some or all of the globe
(two cool examples of that are the Greyfriar series of books by C. & S. Griffith, and the novel Empire of Fear, by Brian Stableford)
-a clan stronghold of one of the Clans from Vampire: The Masquerade

Or anything else your fertile little minds can come up with!

So let's see what fiendishly clever maps you can create this month! More info on the challenge here, and view current entries here. Challenge closes on 31st October.

    Mapping Challenge Suggestions

As mentioned above, September's challenge was inspired by a suggestion from Neyjour (thanks again!) If you've got an idea for a challenge, we have a folder where you can post your suggestions and create poll to guage interest from other members. Have a browse through previous suggestions and vote for your favourites. And if you have an idea that you'd love to see in a challenge, start a thread and tell us all about it (more info here).
