    Post i would like some basic on designing a large city map

    i use adobe creative suite 3, as i don't have the money to buy anything newer. and while it is an old program i can produce some great terrain maps but i honestly don't have a clue as to building a city with streets and alleys and what-not. i have seen several maps on here and they look amazing in comparison everything that i have tried. are there any basics that i could start using now with what i have that won't take too terribly long. i need to be able to pump out a map per week for the game i am trying to run, and things have slowed down to halt for me so i have catching up to do. any help is appreciated. thank you in advance.

    I'd suggest to keep it very simple if you need a map in a week. Just do areas instead of all the streets and buildings. Work out the major terrain features and other obstacles (city wall) in a rough sketch. Then do like a blotches of colour for the various areas of the city. i.e. purple for the noble quarter, and a orange for the slums etc. Lay out the major thoroughfares and name name them, and then add the various specific buildings as you need them for your game.

    I agree with Falconius: Simple and general is the order of the day if you need to make so many.

    It won't get you a beautiful map, and it won't be as good or have as many variations as a more deliberately designed city, but you can get layouts pretty quickly.
