Finally working on the map itself. Got the lighthouse box masked off with rubber cement and started in with the painting. This first layer will get covered over by the water, but hopefully show through enough to give the effect of shallow water, where you can see the landmass beneath, causing the color to be more turquoisey.

That effect looks so good! I can hardly wait to see it progress.

Agreed; that water looks fantastic. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

The water is stunning! From a distance it looks like glacier ice. Zoomed in it looks like very pretty water.

In hindsight, I suppose I could have left most of the page white and left the water alone, but I had it in my head that I'd paint in the whole ocean area. So here is the initial wash. It obliterated most of that first layer, but you can still see it showing through in areas, which was the intent. The effect just isn't as pronounced as I was hoping.

And a second wash across the ocean, which sadly, has mostly wiped out the initial layer.

Live and learn. I'm still relatively happy with it though. The coverage is a bit more even now.

A lot of that "wipeout" factor has to do with the type of paint you're using. Some water colors are labeled "permanent" and don't wash out with successive washes.

I never knew until I started doing this just how complex watercolors are!

And here's the finished product. There are plenty of things I'm not totally happy with, but overall, I feel good about it and encouraged to continue this journey with the fickle medium of watercolo(u)r.
