Default Making maps dominated by a single terrain type interesting - examples?

I'm working on a regional map for a pen-and-paper RPG campaign, focusing on an area of the world which is densely forested, inspired by Germany's Black Forest around the time of Charlemagne. I've been fiddling with this map for a while, and keep coming back to the same problem: how do you make an area that is largely one terrain type, like a vast forest, into an interesting and aesthetically pleasing map? I've broken some of it up with mountains and rivers, but I haven't figured out what to do about huge swathes of the map. Any advice? Alternatively, are there any good examples around here of someone overcoming this sort of problem?

These are two maps that came to my mind after reading your question.
The first one is this map by Meshon and the second one is this map by Max. Both are largely covered in forests and you might be able to draw some inspiration from them.

    Hope this helps!

You could use different tree density, mix different kind of trees, use different trees as the altitude or dryness changes, include clearing, marshes, depict rivers without actually drawing them by spacing the trees more, having some dead/fallen trees.

Default Ideas For Breaking Up Your Vast Forest

How about inset maps on special areas of interest? I like the idea above using different kinds of trees. Larger water features like likes or groups of lakes might also do the trick. Good luck!
