Default Beginner asking for help with a battlefield survey

    Dear Forummers,

I am new to the forum and to cartography, so have joined in the hope that a patient member can give me advice.

In brief, over the next 2 years I shall be surveying a battlefield and will wish to make a detailed map of the fortifications etc. some of which which are still very evident.
The site is approx. 5 x 5 miles of remote South African grassland and bush, criss-crossed by hills and streams. It needs to be done on foot.
Please understand: I am a complete novice; I don't even have a hand-held GPS yet, so will be certainly needing advice on what to buy.
I'll need help with how to create a map using GPS waypoints and possibly combining with other methods like drone photos of selected areas.
I am very much hoping a member would enjoy helping me with this project - both on the forum, and maybe even to give ongoing assistance.
    I look forward to suggestions!

    thanks
    Rob

Hi Rob, welcome to the Guild. There possibly are people here who can help you with this (unfortunately I'm not one of them) but I'm not sure this forum is the best place for this type of question, to be honest. I certainly don't want to chase away a new member, but the majority of people here are interested in creating fantasy maps of one type or another, and our tools tend to be Photoshop and drawing tablets, rather than GPS devices. I think there are other Cartography forums out there that specialise in real world mapping, and you might receive better information on one of those. I hope you'll stick around anyway, but I wanted to explain why you haven't received any answers to your post.

Can anyone direct me to the right forum for my enquiry? I haven't had any luck finding one.
    Many thanks
    Rob
