Default Question on US poster dimensions

Hi All. I have a daft little question for our American mappers, but one I could use some clarification on.

What are the dimensions of a poster-sized map in the US?

we're so random on this side of the pond... we have some but standard is a bit vague.
One large size poster would be 24x36 inches. That's like the standard old fan poster.
There are a lot of sizes. Sizes for pop consumer posters, art sized images for framing..
    printer paper sizes... 8x10, 8.5 x 11, 10x14, 11x17, 13x19, 17x22, 18x24, 20x28, 24x36, etc. [inches]
Best is to decide on a frame size and then build to match that frame size.
Course, that then will depend on whether it's matted or not, and how much matt board border.

There are poster sizes larger than these, plus all the square sizes.
And I'm sure I am missing some.

Thanks for the reply J.Edward. No wonder Google gave me an odd look

Basically, I've been asked to produce 8 small maps that combine into a single poster sized map. Any suggestion for the dimensions I should use for both the individual maps and the final poster size map to make that work? Or is best to determine a size for the poster and then divide it into 8?

Are the individual map sections going to appear in a book?
If so, you'd want them to be based on the size of the book.
    I'd imagine it would be 8 pages at 8.5 x 11, possibly.
Here's a template of how you might lay it out.

The poster is slightly larger than the combined 8 sheets.
But that allows for some unifying border art and a bit of white edge border for cropping with matte board, should it be framed.
    That's would i'd suggest to get you to a 24 x 36 poster from 8 sheets at 8.5 x 11.

At the moment the brief is each map will appear in an ebook, but with the option to print.

Thanks for taking the time to answer J.Edward, you've been a huge help.
