Rappan Athuk Wilderness Map
This is my work on an exploration map for Rappan Athuk. I am trying some new techniques, and different style of forests. No real mountains on this one. There won't be many actual locations as the players will discover them as they go. It is an extremely dangerous place. Going to try and stay disciplined and not move off the line art until it is completely done. Still have lots of clean up and fill in to do.....
Here is an updated draft. I am working on shading to help show some contours. I think the results are ok, but definitely need to edit and work on shaping of the shading. Working on a compass in the upper left. I may leave this black and white, but might consider a second version with color.
I decided to go with a chromatic like look for now, greys and light browns. Ocean is just first pass. Still some work on the compass. Put some text/title in. Will start working on the woods next.
Started shading the forest and working on some highlights. I've figured out a good layer system that will help me adjust hues etc. Probably wont have the forests base color this dark.
This start to looks very good. I like the forest style and colours so far.

Further work now, with shading and highlights, and cleaning up the borders. I tried to darken in the skull and sword illustration too.
Working on labeling, intentionally there are not many things labeled as the players will slowly discover things as they travel the area.
I am struggling a bit with getting the text to stand out on the lighter parts of the map and not be muddy. Maybe I'm over doing it with trying to outline the text, and should just keep it straight black? Any suggestions would be great.
I think I have it where I want it at this point. This will be a good map for the players to start with and explore the area. A few landmarks to peak their interest, and then I can add in details as they discover things.
I'm staying well clear of Horsefly Swamp, ouch
