One of my favorite types of architectural illustration is when a photo of ancient ruins is juxtaposed with an artist's rendering of what the monument might have looked like while it was still in pristine condition. So I decided to do two seperate maps for this "Map a Desert" Lite Challenge entry in order to produce a "before and after" snapshot of a desert river valley separated by a few centuries. Then I did an overlay highlighting the landmarks of the lush green "before" map by placing them in the corners of the arid "after" map:
