Hello all,
It's been a while since I've posted anything on here, and this last project I started a few years ago in lockdown and still haven't finished it
It's been many many hours of work, and I didn't realy appreciate just how big a task I was undertaking (file is 15000 x 9000 pixels, @300DPI) and is my second mapping project. I may have bitten off more than I can chew, but I have been chomping through the work slowly.
I'm posting here for a bit of motivation to myself, and to see the work progress as a thing to look back on.
My first project was all brush based, done with a mouse. I bought a tablet and hand drew this through the computer, and have been learning as I go, teaching myself and refining techniques (most of the reason this has taken over 200 hours so far) and developing my style. My style is somewhat similar to a few of the tutorials (especially the mapping for the artistically challenged!) and I used those brushes as a starting point to try and understand how to draw the various mountain shapes and so forth
So far I have:
Drawn landmass
Drawn rivers
Drawn Mountains
Drawn Hills
Base colour of mountains applied
Started to shadow mountains
Still to go
Features to draw:
Forests
Roads
Cities
Misc - including banner, reliefs etc
Features to colour:
Hills (base, shadows, highlight)
Forests (base, shadows, highlight)
To colour and shade the map as a whole to create a more interesting terrain profile including tundras etc
Other:
Naming places, text etc
Ocean surf/distinct colouration of this
Heraldry for major cities, making nation borders, compass rose
Probably other things I'm forgetting!
Anyway, the current Progress:
Added a base colour for the map to aid visibility
One with the current progress of map map with mountains and hills
One with just mountains
And one with the half way through shading of the mountains
And then a more zoomed in screenshot of one part of the mountain chain
Anyway, hope you enjoy, and hope this keeps me motivated!
