    Default "Mysterious city" (city commission)

Some time ago I worked for a client, I made him a couple world maps for his homebrew setting, he contacted me because he wanted to publish the material through kickstarter, so I had to change almost all the font of the previous map for copyright reasons (fun job but one can easily lost in fonts..) and also change the map name aswell, The Realms of Twilight are now the Kingdoms of Aeon
The main job was that he wanted another map, but this time a big city, the capital of a fantasy kingdom, heavily inspired from ancient Costantinople.
After 3 months (around 200-300 hours) I finally completed it and it's perhaps my biggest map ever, for sure it tested my poor laptop!
I was provided the general city layout and I built from it, due to the size of the project and the time at my disposal I had to sacrifice some details, for instance at start I thought to draw everything by hand and color it, but at the end I realized that I had to find a quicker solution for trees and vegetation and I came up with some layer effects to simulate the trees (thanks photoshop)
(here you can find the WIP https://www.cartographersguild.com/s...ad.php?t=51447

The client gave me permission to publish it, as long as I omitted the city name (even if I think that you can guess it, there are clues in my other maps.. )
The original file is over 60mb, so I had to upload a low quality version at real size (10000px X 7070px)

This is really well done Tom. Congrats on finishing it. I very much like that you have put so much details around the city too.

Holy hell, that is a massive city. It looks gorgeous, there's so much detail to discover! A very harmonius colour palette. Congratulations on finishing this, I don't think I would have survived

WOW. This is incredibly impressive. The scale and detail is amazing.
I keep going back to the map and just exploring, it feels like there's so much to see. Despite so much detail it doesn't feel chaotic at all and works really well as a cohesive map. It reminds me a lot of J. Edward's Haerlech map.

I love the trees in the countryside, how did you do them, is it a brush?

Needless to say, this is an example of some of the best of modern fantasy cartography and deserves an award.

What a job! And what a result! Incredible... It is both beautiful and very clear. Your client really has a great tool to support his narrative! Well done!

Thank you! I did my best to emulate some mediterranean flora -except for the swamp- so: Maritime Pines, Oaks, Cypresses, Olive trees and rows of vines obviously

Wow thank you for your kind words! Yes actually J. Edward is one of my favourite artist, it sure was an inspiration!
Yes, I made the trees with a custom brush, I kept trying and I'm pretty happy of the result too
