May/June 2024 Challenge: The City of Endoth

So in my mega lore, there is this city, the city of Endoth, located on a river by the mountains.

I have an old map of it, which is cute (I was testing a new style) but unfortunately very tiny and low res, it was just a thumbnail sketch and I can't find a larger copy so I never finished it, as well as a front-on illustration. These are what I will be using as reference for the map. As for which color palette I have selected, well, I think that will be PAINFULLY obvious very shortly...

YES THAT IS RIGHT! I HAVE SELECTED THE HARDEST, MOST GARISH COLOR SCHEME POSSIBLE IN THIS CHALLENGE! To... probably... no one's surprise! I hope someone out there was hoping that someone was gonna go with the psychedelic neon map because YOWZA

Although I was very tempted to do the green and purple too, since that is also thematically appropriate.

I am using the exact colors so far with nothing new added, the river is just the pink at a lower opacity over the purple.

Yes, who else would dare to say, well, my map COULD look like this



and that makes a lot of sense and looks good and doesn't hurt my eyes but...

...but I could have...

LURID POP PURPLE PINK AND ORANGE??? YEAH!

We will see if I can actually resolve this into something that looks good though, lol.

Quite frankly it was very good enter-the-challenge bait because I was like "ohhhh you put that there for me YOU KNOW I CAN'T SAY NO TO THAT"

There is also this option for how to set it up, where the land isn't the darker color and the darker color is only used for lineart flare. I'm not sure which is better.

Experimentally leaning into the pop art nature of this. Possibly this reads better than the dark background? Then that leaves me with the dark purple to also use as labelling. Color variations are created with the original palette on different blend modes so far. I might stick with this base. We'll see!

Thank you! I like lurid but this is a little out of even my comfort zone.

I ended up giving some pop to the main roads and I'm experimenting a bit with fill now that the walls are done, testing out some calligraphy labels in the conlang. I also added a toning to the green space (which is in yellow) to help separate it from the orange water.

I added a compass and a frame (possibly still in progress). This city is famous for their storytelling tapestries made of embroidery so I am using that for the frame.
